Ten Bob Note

Wednesday 2nd April 2008

Location: Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, Kennet & Avon Canal

Today: 3 miles, 5 locks. Total distance: 1267 miles.  Total locks: 812

A short journey today, we moved on to Great Bedwyn as there is a shop here. After Great Bedwyn, it is quite some distance before the next shop at Pewsey.

Mobile phone reception (t-mobile) is almost non existent here and was much the same back at Froxfield. The only way to get a connection is to hold the phone outside the boat. I suspect the situation is going to be much the same for some time to come as the canal passes through mostly rural areas between Hungerford and Devizes.

Most of the locks that we have passed through in recent days have signs on them requesting that the locks be left empty. At this time of the year, if heading east, you can almost guarantee that the locks will be against you. Also, there are lots of locks on this stretch of canal – since joining the K&A at Reading, there has been an average of 1.2 locks for every mile of canal.

We took a quick walk up to the village after taking on water and mooring up. There is a village shop that sell just about everything plus a bakery and a post office. Unfortunately, the baker is currently on holiday so they are buying in bread during his absence.
