8th-10th June 2007 Location: Alrewas, Staffs. N52:43:52 W1:46:02 Today: 10 miles, 7 locks. Total distance: 124 miles. Total locks: 89 We left Branston this morning and headed back to Burton on Trent to turn around (hate going back on ourselves). We then headed for the village of Alrewas as there are stores and a butcher there.. All in all, it was a long day and the afternoon was very hot and humid. Lots of locks and queues at most of them. When we moored up at Alrewas, we headed into the village to get something fresh to cook on the BBQ. There is a fantastic butcher in the village. Everything is sourced locally. We picked up some marinated chicken, some home made sausages, some minted lamb burgers and a meat skewer. We cooked everything on the BBQ and it was delicious. Will be visiting the butcher again in the morning. There is also a co-op, a paper shop, Fish and Chip shop, Chinese and a post office in the village. Alrewas is a lovely little village with many old thatched cottages. We have been looking at changing the Bubble diesel stove for a solid fuel stove that can burn wood and coal. The stove that seems most popular at chandlers is the Morso Squirrel. Came very close to buying one. I posted a question on the Canal World forum and a few members came back reporting that there have been a few problems with Squirrels cracking various plates in a short space of time and that spares are expensive. Glad we didn’t go for the Squirrel now!! The Becton Bunny stove gets good reports on the forum so will look into one of those. 9th June This is a nice village and a very nice mooring so we are staying for a couple of days. Went back into the village for the papers, a visit to the butcher and a few odds and ends. Verry hot again today. Two washing machine loads today. Good job we filled up with water yesterday. There will be no problem with drying as it is so hot outside today. 10th June Had a day of rest in and around Alrewas.
