It has been a busy weekend. I picked up a hire car on Friday morning and drove down to Wiltshire to visit my mother and sister. I travelled to Wiltshire via Porthleven in Cornwall as I had business down there. All in all, I was driving for 10 hours non stop – a long day.

I was quite shocked when I saw my mother, she has deteriorated drastically over the last couple of months. A year ago she would walk a couple of mile almost every day, now it takes her an age just to get up out of a chair and walking is very difficult for her. She has gone down hill very rapidly with osteoporosis.

Drove back to Braunston yesterday afternoon and spent the first couple of hours getting it back up to temperature and re-charging the batteries. It has been a cold weekend in the Midlands.

Woke up this morning to a heavy frost. It took an age to scrape the ice off the hire car so that I could return it to Daventry.

Got back to the boat not long after nine and pulled the pins to head off towards Rugby. Stopped beside ‘The Stop House’ to dump rubbish and to fill up with water.

It has been a beautiful winter’s morning, very cold but clear blue skies. The ropes were still frozen when I stopped to moor up. Around 12:00 it started to cloud over so I decided I call it a day and stop for the night as I am in no hurry to be anywhere. I have moored up in a nice quiet location not too far from the Onley Young Offenders prison, there won’t be much in the way of passing foot traffic here. I have moored here before and it has always been nice and quiet.

Tuesday 2nd

Went for a nice walk across the fields to take a look at the Barby windmill this morning, photos below. All in all, it was a very pleasant 5 mile round trip - see map for details. It was hard but pleasant work ascending the Barby hill due to the ground being so soft and slippery. I had to dunk Archie in the canal to clean him off on our return to the boat because he was absolutely filthy - he wasn't happy about that.....
