Tuesday 25th November 2008
Location: Braunston, Northamptonshire, Grand Union Canal
Today: 6 miles, 3 locks. Total distance: 1881 miles. Total locks: 1304
It was a very cold night last night, there was even a thin layer of ice on the canal in sheltered areas this morning.
Pulled the pins around 07:45 and headed on towards Braunston. Stopped off at Calcutt marina to top up with diesel and to buy a bottle of gas. Diesel for heating etc. is currently 66p per litre there.
It has been a lovely cold crisp winter’s day today, just the kind I like.
The Calcutt locks were a bit dodgy due to ice in patches and having my ropes frozen solid didn’t help much. Still, they are easy locks and it didn’t take long to get through them.
I was hoping to find a mooring along the 14 day visitor’s section here in Braunston but they were all full. I am currently moored on a 48 hour stretch so will have to move by Thursday. Hopefully a space will become available in the 14 day moorings by then. I would like to stay here until next Tuesday as I have a few things to attend to.
Passed Iain and Alison on coal boat Gosty Hill so bought a few bags of Stoveglow to keep my stock levels up. Now full of diesel, full of coal and full of gas (the bottled kind). Had I known Gosty was going to be in Braunston I would have waited to buy my diesel from them. I like to support the working boats as they provide such a good service.
