Ten Bob Note

Wednesday 21st May 2008

Location: Kintbury, Berkshire, Kennet & Avon

Today: 3 miles, 3 locks. Total distance: 1351 miles.  Total locks: 931

Went for a lovely walk around Hungerford marsh with the dogs before doing a bit of shopping in the town.

Moved off around 10:00 and stopped at the Hungerford water point to top up with water. The water pressure was so low that we gave up and moved on to Kintbury and filled the tank there.

While walking the dogs along the tow path at Kintbury, we came across a couple of posters advertising a new butcher in the village so we will have to go looking tomorrow and give them a try.

We found some very dry dead trees near one of the locks that we passed through this morning so it was out with the chainsaw. At first I thought the chain must be getting blunt as it was slow in cutting but it turned out to be just very hard wood. Later in the morning we came across a dead Willow tree so it was out with the chainsaw again. The saw went through the Willow no problem. Not sure what the first wood is but it is very hard – it will be interesting to see how well it burns. It was good that we came across some wood as we are just about out of logs and we are still lighting the fire in the evenings. Will cut up the wood and split it when we get to a more secluded mooring, there are too many walkers here at Kintbury and I don’t want to disturb them with the noise of the chainsaw.
