Ten Bob Note

Tuesday 25th March 2008

Location: Newbury, Berkshire, Kennet & Avon Canal

Today: 8 miles, 10 locks. Total distance: 1256 miles.  Total locks: 799

Pulled the pins around 07:30 this morning as we were just about out of water and needed to go looking for some.

Met up with nb Kairos along the way and shared a few locks and swing bridges with them until Newbury.

We stopped off at The Newbury Boat Company to take on water. They charge £1 to fill the tank. This is the first time we have ever had to pay for water but as the next free water point is some way off, we had no choice. Picked up a cylinder of gas while we were there - £20.17.

We had heard lots of bad things about Newbury lock. The river joins the cutting from both the left and the right just below the lock. As it turned out, it wasn’t too bad at all, certainly nowhere near as hairy as Woolhampton lock.

We moored up just above Newbury lock and walked to Sainsbury’s to pick up some shopping.

We decided that we didn’t fancy staying the night in Newbury as there were some unsavoury looking lads hanging around the lock drink bottles of beer as we were coming up through the lock early afternoon so we wondered what it would be like at night???

After packing the shopping away, we moved on another mile or so and found a nice quiet spot for the night.

Wednesday 26th
We walked the dogs back into Newbury and did a full tour of the town. It’s quite a nice place, well worth a visit.
