Today: 10 miles, 3 locks. Total distance: 1130 miles. Total locks: 718
Made another trip to Tesco before pulling the pins and heading back down to Braunston.
A bitterly cold day today, what a contrast to yesterday.
Have decided that we are going to head for the Kennet and Avon canal. There are stoppages on the Thames until the 14th March so we need to time our arrival at Oxford accordingly. We have family in the Wiltshire area and it will be nice to go and visit them once we get to there.
I have been looking at the cost of Thames licenses. A one day license is just under £30 and the next option up, the 15 day license is just under £100. When you buy a license, the first day is in effect free so if I were to buy a one day license, I would have all of the day that we purchase the license on plus all of the next day covered. I may go for this option and try and cover the 40 miles and 13 locks from Oxford down to Reading in two days – a bit of a push but possible.
Sunday 17th
A very cold night last night. The temperature was down to minus 5 at midnight and probably went down even further. See photos below.
Monday 18th
We had intended to move on to Napton today but never made it. The temperature was down to minus seven over night and the ice on the canal didn’t clear until the first boat went past at around 13:30. By that time we didn’t have the energy to pull the pins and move on. We are both still weak from this bout of flu that we have had for just over a week now. We are on the mend but even the slightest exertion is a chore. We will be just about out of water by tomorrow morning so ice or no ice we will be on the move. This is the worst bout of illness either of us have had for many years, we don’t normally suffer much with colds or flu.
